Organist/Accompanist
South Parish Congregational Church, U.C.C.
Augusta, Maine
South Parish Congregational Church, U.C.C. in Augusta, Maine is seeking
applications for the position of Organist/Accompanist to join the Music
Ministry at this historic house of worship. In addition to being a skilled
organist with a thorough background in liturgical organ literature, the ideal
candidate will be comfortable playing service music and accompanying on
piano for select services that take place in the chapel during the winter
months. The preferred candidate will also demonstrate a background and
willingness to work as an accompanist (with the choir director and senior
choir) during services and weekly pre-service choir practices. Strong
communication skills and the ability to work within a team (along with the
minister and choir director) to plan music for worship services are strongly
desired. Responsibilities include:
1. Providing organ music for the Sunday services from the first Sunday (after
Labor Day) of September to the 3rd Sunday in June
2. Providing organ music for special services during the liturgical year; such
as Christmas Eve, Maundy Thursday, etc.
3. Accompanying the Choir anthems on Sundays and for the choir’s weekly
rehearsals. Planning with the Choir Director.
4. Playing for weddings and Funerals as they arise; and consulting with the
participants to full-fill their wishes and needs as possible. In some
circumstances it is allowable to let a qualified visiting organist play for the
service in order to meet the requirements of the position.
5. Work with Choir Director and the Minister in planning and fulfilling
liturgical requirements for the year.
6. Arranging for organ and piano maintenance – for the organ the Andover
Organ Company should be used as they make a Maine maintenance trip
twice a year.
7. Educating the congregation about organ literature and/or liturgical music
more broadly by writing periodic short articles for the weekly church
newsletter and/or a music note for the Sunday bulletin. Most of the time it
can relate to the music being played on a given Sunday.
Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae and letters of recommendation
via email to southparish@gmail.com, or through regular mail to:
South Parish Congregational Church, U.C.C.
9 Church Street
Augusta, ME 04330
Interviews will be conducted until a suitable candidate is chosen.
The organ is a 23 stop tracker instrument built in 1866 by the E. & G.G.
Hook Organ Company. It sits majestically with its walnut case in the rear
gallery at South Parish Congregational Church. After some minor alterations
at the turn of the 20th Century, the Andover Organ Company of Methuen,
Massachusetts restored it to its original stop list in 1985 and performs
continuing maintenance on it since then. It is listed on the Organ Historical
Society’s National Registry of Historic Organs.
